Spandex / Elastane & Lycra®

What is Spandex

What is Spandex?

Fabric Type Synthetic Elastomer
Key Benefits Extreme Stretch & Recovery, Shape Retention, 경량, Unrestricted Movement
Feel Rarely used alone; contributes a smooth, compressive feel to blended fabrics.
최고의 대상 Blending with nearly all other fibers to create performance activewear.
Sustainability Petroleum-based. Recycled options are an emerging technology.
Spandex (common in North America) and Elastane (common in Europe) are the generic terms for this incredibly stretchy fiber. Lycra® is the original, world-renowned brand name for elastane, invented in 1958. Think of it likeband-aidfor adhesive bandages—Lycra® is a specific type of high-quality elastane. Its primary purpose is never to be used alone, but to be blended with other fibers like nylon or polyester to add superior stretch and recovery.

Core Properties for Activewear

Performance for All Bodies

Exceptional Elasticity

Spandex can stretch up to 500% of its original length without breaking and, once released, snaps back to its initial state. This "rubber-band" effect is what allows for a full, unrestricted range of motion during any activity.

Shape Retention & Compression

This fiber provides the supportive, "hugging" sensation in activewear. It ensures that leggings don't bag at the knees and that waistbands stay securely in place, maintaining the garment's intended fit wash after wash.

두 번째 피부의 편안함

경량 & Unrestrictive

Despite its power, spandex is incredibly lightweight and doesn't add bulk to the fabric. It adds immense functionality while allowing the primary fiber's characteristics (like softness or moisture-wicking) to shine.

내구성이 뛰어난 건설

Resistance & Durability

Spandex is resistant to deterioration from body oils, perspiration, and most lotions, which helps to prolong the life and fit of the garment.

Our Commitment to Spandex Quality & Consistency

A superior final garment begins with flawless raw materials. Every roll of fabric we source from our certified mill partners undergoes a rigorous incoming quality control (IQC) process at our facility before it is cleared for production. Our inspection includes checks for Color Consistency, Fabric Weight & Thickness, Defect Detection and Performance Testing. This meticulous attention to fabric quality is the first step in our comprehensive quality assurance system.

Color Consistency

Verifying shade accuracy against standards using spectrophotometry.

Fabric Weight & Thickness

Ensuring uniformity in GSM (grams per square meter).

Defect Detection

Scanning for any tears, stains, or weaving imperfections.

Performance Testing

Conducting sample tests for stretch, recovery, and durability.

The Future of Sustainable Stretch

Standard spandex is a petroleum-based product. However, as it’s used in small percentages (typically 5-20%), its environmental impact is closely tied to the primary fiber in the blend. The industry is actively developing more sustainable alternatives, including recycled spandex. Sansansun is committed to staying at the forefront of this innovation, ready to incorporate certified eco-friendly stretch solutions as they become commercially available.

Garment Care

Washing

Washing

Always wash in cold water. Hot water can permanently damage the elastane fibers, causing them to lose their elasticity.

Drying

Drying

Avoid high heat at all costs. Tumble dry on the lowest heat setting, or better yet, hang dry your garments to preserve their stretch and recovery.

Avoid

Avoid

Never use chlorine bleach, as it will destroy the fibers. Avoid ironing, as direct high heat will melt the spandex.
